The first-ever Scout Journalism Skills Training of the Amateur Media Association of Philippine Scouts started on Saturday, January 15. Kamalayaan 2022 received support through messages from the Boy Scouts of the Philippines National President Dale B. Corvera and Secretary-General Rogelio S. Villa Jr.
The said event kicked off with an Opening Remarks from Mr. Jan Khim Gamora, co-Founder of the Amateur Media Association of Philippine Scouts, followed by an inspirational message from Hon. Dale Corvera—BSP National President.
Corvera underscored the critical role of responsible journalism in this age of lies and falsehood, and the emergence of the technology-driven era. He likewise encouraged the participants to take the training with all their hearts in order for them to be able to help in the advancement of the Scouting movement equipped with necessary skills that may be gained through active participation in the aforementioned training.
“Kamalayaan 2022 (I understand) intends to teach our scout-journalists every skill they need to advance journalism standards in the scouring community and propagate the scouting ideals; not just inside but also outside the movement”, Hon. Corvera said.
The Secretary-General of BSP, Engr. Rogelio Villa Jr. also congratulated the AMAPS for launching its journalism training for scouts, through his message. “This training or workshop will give an opportunity to Scouts to heighten their skills and talents in writing. The importance of good and responsible journalism”, Engr. Villa said.
The first-day journalism training was composed of three sessions that focused on: “Introduction to Journalism” by Ms. Lou Marie Cuarto—Associate Editor of ThePILLARS Publication; “Citizen Journalism” by Ms. Jene-Anne Pangue- Community and Civic Engagement Specialist, Rappler; and “Journalism Principles and Ethics” by Ms. Abby Bilan—Spokesperson, College Editors’ Guild of the Philippines Bicol.
